With enough new additions to surprise and delight even the most veteran fan of both titles, combined with a gorgeous art style that does so many favours to Dragon Quest, I somehow found myself genuinely excited, enchanted by, and unable to stop playing something I’ve played almost annually for decades now. Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D is one of the most faithful remakes I’ve ever played, for better and for worse. If, like me, you’ve played a version of this wonderful game recently, it might not be worth spending the cash on a new version that is functionally almost identical and left me wanting more.Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake (Switch) It goes without saying that fans of the original will want to snap this up, but if you’re looking for a good ‘entry-level’ RPG or you just want to know what the long-running franchise is all about, Dragon Quest III is the game for you.The game is a true masterpiece. The only other RPG that I’ve played that came close – and this I played in Japanese, which slowed things down, but it was still a lot of fun for me – was Dragon Quest X Offline.Dragon Quest III was always a deceptively linear game, and that’s very much to its benefit. The opening section keeps you locked on an island, but bit by bit the game will expand your freedom until you have access to the entire world to walk, boat, or fly around.

If you’re a fan of classic RPGs or even if you’re just looking for a seriously engaging story to sink your teeth into, the Switch version of Dragon Quest 11 S really delivers the goods. It’s got a great story, a good soundtrack, fun characters, and it’s simply just really fun to play. There’s very few actual flaws that I can think of, and even if there were, this game is just so good that the flaws don’t matter in the long run. Highly recommend.
