Why is Darkwood so good?
Darkwood’s horror succeeds due to its incredible atmosphere. From the very beginning of the game, you’re at war with everything and everyone. From the forest and its inhabitants to time itself. You’re an intruder here, and it couldn’t be any clearer that you’re not wanted. The Being is an immensely powerful eldritch entity which serves as the overarching antagonist of Darkwood. It only makes an appearance in the Epilogue, and appears to be located inside a giant canyon overgrown with tree-roots, and is surrounded by hundreds of Sleepers and corpses.
What is the plot of Darkwood?
Darkwood is set somewhere in Poland in the late 1980s where a mysterious forest has engulfed a large amount of land and is continuing to expand. Many people have been left trapped by the forest and a strange plague is ravaging the survivors, killing and causing victims to transform into monsters and abominations. Darkwood has a reputation as “a horror game with no jumpscares”, which is truly impressive considering how MOST horror games rely almost exclusively on jumpscares.In a genre full of cheap thrills and tired tropes, ‘Darkwood’ goes above and beyond to create a truly terrifying experience.
