Why did Bubsy 3D fail?
IGN’s Levi Buchanan cited the game as a failure to transition from 2D to 3D, criticizing the character design compared to previous Bubsy games, as well as the game’s controls. Game Revolution suggested that the negative reception for Bubsy 3D may be why developers are reluctant to make another 3D game in the series. The problem largely becomes clear with context. Bubsy 3D was in development around the same time that Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot were, and Eidetic didn’t have the budget or team size that either of those games could bring to bear. All they could do was make the best game they could with the resources they had.
