In the movie, Atlas explains he simply got kicked out of the house, and seems to allude to his mom’s boyfriend. It’s more explicit in the book. His mom’s boyfriend was abusive and they got into a fight. Unlike Ryle, Atlas shows his love for Lily by trusting her and giving her space to make her own choices. Atlas and Lily reconnect at the end of the novel, after Lily has left Ryle, and it’s implied that they will rekindle their romance.As a teenager, Atlas was homeless, living in the abandoned house near Lily after he got kicked out of his abusive home.
