What is the fatal triad of trauma?
In trauma patients, the triad of hypothermia, acidosis, and coagulopathy has been shown to cause an increase in morbidity and mortality. This lethal combination was first named the “bloody vicious cycle” in 1982 by the American Trauma Society when it was noted that the triad caused worsening hemorrhage and death. The lethal triad of hypothermia, acidosis, and coagulopathy remains a critical concern in trauma care, significantly impacting patient outcomes.
