Was the SG-1000 a success?
The SG-1000 made little impact on the video game industry, but has been recognized for being Sega’s first video game console. Retro Gamer writer Damien McFerran said it was an abject failure, but called it and the SG-1000 II the Japanese forefathers of the Master System. The SG-1000 was not a great commercial success, partly due to competition from the Nintendo Famicom, released in Japan on the same day as the SG-1000, but it did sell 2 million units worldwide before being discontinued in 1985.
What is the most powerful Sega console?
Sega’s next console attempt at worldwide success came through the 1989 Sega Genesis, the company’s most powerful system to date. The Genesis featured sharp 16-bit graphics with beautiful color definition. The Genesis had a better processor, and some graphical modes or capabilities the SNES could not do as well, mostly with larger sprites and higher resolutions iirc. SNES had a larger color palette, transparency, and some fancy effects like mode 7 though. The genesis was a little faster, but not double the speed. The slowdown issues from the SNES early on were from developers (like Capcom) that probably just had inexperienced devs at the time. The NES dev kit was, in a way, easier to develop for because it handled just about everything for you.
