It’s not a secret that Saints Row was partially inspired by Grand Theft Auto, and thus it had to do some things differently to stand out and attract players – otherwise, it would’ve been seen as nothing more but a mere GTA clone. Saints Row: The Third was an unexpected continued success for the company. It was featured in promotions with Humble Bundle, PlayStation Plus, and Xbox Live Games with Gold over the next several years.

Chris Stockman, the creator of Saints Row, admitted that the game was a ripoff of GTA III and borrowed its design wholesale, but released at a time when there was no other competition for games on the Xbox 360, and believes that if Saints Row was released after GTA IV, the game would have never succeeded. The 2022 reboot of the Saints Row series was far from being a commercial success for Embracer, especially given its $100 million budget.Parent organization Koch Media, owner of the Saints Row intellectual property, said they were giving the developer time and space to make the game they saw fit. The series had a rocky history in the years prior to the reboot’s development.
