Is Gollum a good LOTR?
Though technically a villain, Gollum has a good side and makes some right decisions. He has genuine affection for Frodo and a desire to be helpful which is shown by his catching the rabbits for them to eat and leading Frodo and Sam along the shortcut through the Dead Marshes to ensure orcs do not catch them. Aragorn captured Gollum in the dead Marshes area, and it makes sense to go through Mirkwood.

Why is Sauron afraid of Gollum?
He did not trust Gollum, for he divined something indomitable in him, which could not be overcome, even by the Shadow of Fear, except by destroying him. It’s possible that Gollum’s prolonged search for the ring allowed it to maintain a significant power over him, suspending his aging process. In contrast, Bilbo’s exposure to the ring’s influence waned after he willingly (mostly) relinquished it, allowing his aging to resume more noticeably.Bilbo did not have the ring for nearly as long as Gollum did. Bilbo had it for like 50 years compared to Gollum’s 500. Gandalf says in Shadows of the Past that the means by which people acquire the ring can have a great affect on your relationship with it.The One Ring acts as an external stimulus that hijacks Gollum’s reward and motivation system, creating a cycle of intense craving and dependence. Over time, his brain becomes programmed to put the Ring above all else, just as a substance addiction can take over basic survival instincts in humans.Hence why Gollum didn’t rapidly wither away after Bilbo took the ring from him in the hobbit. So Gollum couldn’t have aged rapidly like Bilbo because he died with the ring. If he hadn’t died with the ring, he would have withered away quickly just as Bilbo did, because both of them were unnaturally old due to the ring.
