Why is Devotion banned?
The narrative horror game disappeared from Steam just a week after release under a cloud of controversy. A piece of art portraying Chinese president Xi Jinping in an unflattering light had made its way into the game, riffing on a Winnie the Pooh meme that had been banned in China. The game also incorporates elements based on Taiwanese culture and folk religion. The game was released on February 19, 2019, but was removed from Steam shortly afterwards on February 26, after a controversial Easter egg referencing Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, was found in the game.
