The catholic Pope has much influence in medieval Europe. He can excommunicate catholic kingdoms and call for crusades against non-catholic kingdoms. A knighthood cannot be bought and it carries no military obligations to the Sovereign. The King (or a member of the Royal Family acting on his behalf) confers knighthoods in Britain, either at a public investiture or privately.This demonstrates that while knights believed in the defense of the church and God, they were secular and not part of the church. It distinguishes this strand of piety from that of the clergy, and shows that knights had independent and different roots.Most knights were required to be at least 21 years old.
