Not a bad game, but Age of Empires 2 is just a huge step up in comparison. It’s the first game but way better. I would say Age of Empires 4 is the best for new players. It’s the most streamlined, doesn’t have as many hidden and clunky mechanics. AoE4 is more modern and beginner friendly. AoE2 requires more meta-knowledge and micro for high level play.AoE1 isn’t a bad game if you just want to relive an old classic, but 2 is just better at everything it does. There’s not really any area I can think of where the games take enough of a differing path that there would be an argument that 1 would be superior besides just liking the ancient theme better than mediaeval.I played both a very large amount, and I have to say that the only parts of AoE 3 that are better than AoE 2 are the graphics, home city, and trade. Everything else, the number of civilizations, the presence/lack of random maps, the AI, the campaign, the variety of units, buildings, and upgrades, goes to AoE 2.
