What makes Darkwood so good?

Darkwood is a unforgiving game about survival, exploration and fear set in mysterious woods somewhere in the territory of the Soviet Bloc. By blending RPG, roguelike and adventure elements together with a challenging difficulty, Darkwood aims to please players craving for a deep and rewarding experience. In a genre full of cheap thrills and tired tropes, ‘Darkwood’ goes above and beyond to create a truly terrifying experience. I’m always looking for the next horror game to truly scare me. Not to simply jolt me awake with a jump scare, but to really strike fear in me.It almost effortlessly dances past all the usual pitfalls of horror- there’s no jumpscares, no unnecessary gore, no weirdly creepy plot twist, no overuse of unfair game mechanics. Instead, Darkwood invites the player on a 100 plus hour mild heart attack as you explore and try to escape the infected woods.

What is the story behind Darkwood?

Darkwood is set somewhere in Poland in the late 1980s where a mysterious forest has engulfed a large amount of land and is continuing to expand. Many people have been left trapped by the forest and a strange plague is ravaging the survivors, killing and causing victims to transform into monsters and abominations. Darkwood being set in the late 1980s means that a Forest and root network approximately 360 square kilometres in size managed to form in as little as 10 years.
