The first hurdle is placed after a run-up of 13 metres from the starting line. The next 9 hurdles are set at a distance of 8. The lead leg plays a significant role in controlling hurdle clearance – the quicker the lead leg, the quicker the touchdown. A common misconception is that hurdlers lead with the foot. This often results in a straight leg, dropping the hips and slowing you down. Instead, hurdlers should lead with the knee. This will equate to 4 steps between hurdles as the first step will be the athlete’s lead leg coming over the previous hurdle. The first stride between hurdles will be counted when the athlete’s trail leg from the previous hurdle touches the ground. To initiate the hurdle takeoff, the takeoff foot is planted under the hips (planting the foot in front of the hips is a common error). During takeoff, the hips must displace in a forward direction toward the hurdle, so that when the hurdler leaves the ground, the hips are significantly in front of the takeoff foot.Starting Position: Stand facing a row of hurdles (the hurdles should be spaced so they have an equal distance between each hurdle); start with the left leg forward and right leg back, right arm forward and left arm back (you can alternate this starting position, but be sure to have the opposite arm and leg forward); .The trail leg is the leg that follows the lead leg over the hurdle. Athletes should swing their trail leg out to the side and extend it fully, so that it clears the hurdle without touching it. The trail leg should then be brought back down to the ground quickly to maintain speed.
