Is Maniac Mansion worth playing?
Maniac Mansion may not be the best adventure game of all time — if anything, it was simply released way too early in the history of the genre to stand a chance — but it might as well be the single most innovative adventure game of all time, period. The Maniac Maniac Deluxe version by fans is the worse version, most of the content was just taken from DOTT and they weren’t creative at all. The only real advantage, was a slightly inproved interface.Maniac Mansion is an interactive a comedic horror story that pays heavy homage to B-movie clichés. And it has some quirks about it. The characters often look straight out at the user, awaiting his commands. Also, the perspective is always entirely perpendicular to the back wall of each game screen.
How hard is Maniac Mansion?
I first played the NES version of Maniac Mansion, but it’s basically the same as the PC and Deluxe versions. It’s a tough, sometimes punishing adventure game, but I got through it without needing hints or a guide. Myst, on the other hand, I ended up quitting due to frustration and never came back to. Unlike later Lucasfilm titles as well as most adventure games nowadays, in Maniac Mansion it is both possible to die and possible to get yourself into a dead-end.
