An absurd game in the spectrum of final fantasy, but in a positive sense. final fantasy xiv if i was only considering the original release of final fantasy xiv, the game would easily be at the bottom of this list. It was just that bad, and square enix was right to completely scrap that version.I think final fantasy 2 is amazing and actually the most underrated ff in the franchise. It’s hands down the most tragic ff story in the first 5 games. Most of the people you meet in the game end up dead and sacrificing themselves for the freedom of the rebels.

I don’t think you need to play FF1 before or after, but you’ll definitely get some of the references more easily if you do. There isn’t much reason to play FF1 unless you’re genuinely curious about the series’ origins. FF1 is very bland (almost no story, very simplistic). If you actually enjoyed FF1, then you are all set – all the others are better than FF1 except maybe FF2. FF2 actually has a story (unlike FF1), but has a bizarre leveling system where spells, weapons, and stats only improve when used in battle.
