The Yakuza gangster series has long been seen as a Japanese Grand Theft Auto but Masayoshi Yokoyama, one of the main designers of the hugely successful games, dismisses any such comparison. From the start, we decided not to have a game where you can hit people yourself. The games are not like gta, there isn’t really anything that is similar to yakuza. It’s a game full of drama, japanese comedy nonsense, and men ripping their shirts off and fighting on top of a building to see who’s ideals prevails.Yakuza is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood, Sexual Themes, Strong Language, Use of Alcohol, and Violence.Yakuza Kiwami is great, it really is. For me, it wears too much of its PS2 ancestry on its sleeve and may turn off many modern gamers in the west, which I think would be a shame. The story and characters are brilliant and the combat, imprecise as it is, is still fun.We’d recommend starting chronologically with Yakuza 0 – either the original or new Director’s Cut – or jumping ahead to the clean slate of a new generation with Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
